Skip the metaphors for a moment and the mechanism is arithmetic. Link juice explained plainly: search engines treat a link as a signal that the destination is worth reading, and a page’s capacity to send that signal depends on how much has been sent to it. Divide that capacity by the number of links on the page and you have a crude estimate of what each one carries. Everything else — relevance weighting, position, trust factors — adjusts the number rather than replacing the model.
